Birthday Fun

Thanks to all who called me and sent me cards wishing me a happy birthday. It was a fun day. The managers grilled at work as a special treat. It was so good. I had a pork chop, steak and some delicious side dishes. Later that night we had the year end party for the Rock. We went out to the Harris' (one of the families in our churh) out in the country to have a bonfire. We did some sweet things like caber toss, ultimate frisbee, and sing songs to God around the campfire.

It was nice having a couple of big events happening on my birthday because it was like a present to me only without me being the focus.... that is until Wendy had everyone at the party sing happy birthday to me. :-)

building

The Rock is trying to purchase a building that we can use for a meeting place for our friday night services and for a community center.... a place where students can come to do homework, hang out, or just get out their house/away from campus. It is really cool to think about all the different ways the building can be used. The process of getting the building is an adventure in and of itself. We will need a minimum of $71,000 for a downpayment and have made a goal to get $100,000 for the downpayment. It is remarkable to think of a handful of college students and recent college grads, all in debt trying to get by, purchasing a building listed at $450,000. But I guess nothing is too big for God. We are a few months into this and have come to an agreement with the seller. We already have raised a good amount of the money too. Our plan is to raise $50k from students in the Rock and $50k from 5 major donors, donating $10k each. The latest update shows that we have raised about $47k in pledges from within the Rock and we have 3 major donors. More details about where we are at can be found at here. All this happening in just a few months is nothing short of God working. For more details on the building and our vision for it can be found at www.z37.org.

Iowa

It's official. I'm finally an Iowan. I got an Iowa license today and Iowa license plates yesterday. Next time I drive in Illinois, I will be just another dumb Iowa driver. :-) It is exciting though to get officially moved over since I plan on living here for at least a little while. I wanted to put my plates on today because it was kinda exciting. I think I will keep the IL plates on there until my birthday though. Enjoy them while I still can.

Glow Bracelets

For those that don't know, the Rock (the college ministry that I am involved with) is trying to purchase a building. While that is a whole topic in itself (perhaps for later), that is not the point of this post. I was looking at glow stick bracelets online so that we could play midnight ultimate frisbee. Then I had an idea. What if we sold them on welch ave. outside the bars and clubs over the weekend? I found out that you can make some good money doing that. So last night I purchased some 500 glow bracelets.... all for just $37! Thats about 7 cents/bracelet.
